Another great thing about chrome toothbrush holders is the fact that even though they look nice, they’re pretty cheap. Unlike going for something made out of porcelain or ceramic that might be made in a cool design, chrome holders are easily found at low prices through a number of online stores and physical shops/stores. You can find most of these shiny holders for about $20-$30, depending on if you get a wall mounted toothbrush holder or one that you can put right there on your sink. I definitely recommend the wall mounted variety though; these tend to be easier to get out of the way, and lend your bathroom to a more classy look.

Where can you get these great little toothbrush holders? Check online for many good deals, but also have a look in some of the actual stores you may see in town. Bed, Bath, and Beyond has a great assortment of chrome accessories for your bathroom, including these holders. The nice thing about BB&B is that they tend to sell things for pretty cheap compared to the smaller stores.

That’s what the “economy of scale” factor will do for you; that chain is so big that they can really bring down prices. If you’re looking for something a little bit more generic, you can even look at Wal-Mart for some decent deals, but I tend to try to avoid supporting Wal-Mart just for my own personal reasons. They really have squashed local businesses in most places they go, but I digress.

Okay, so like just about everything else I’ve ever written online, the first thing I’m going to say is “read the instruction manual.” Whichever wall mounted unit you get, you should receive a step-by-step plan that will help you install it with the minimum amount of fuss. These are generally written with the standard amateur workman in mind, so don’t worry about that. They put everything in layman’s terms (heck, that’s what I need!), so just about anyone in the general public can put one of these up. Plus, it’s kind of fun to get your hands dirty every once in a while, right? Right.

Alright, the first thing you need to do after reading that instruction manual is figure out the material that you’re going to be attaching the toothbrush holder to. I recommend straight drywall when you’re first starting out. Drywall is easily drilled into, and it’s strong enough to mount just about any type of toothbrush holder you can buy at the store. It’s also easy to repair, just in case you get out of hand a little bit and mess something up. A little putty will fix whatever slip up that you might have had.

I don’t recommend installing a toothbrush holder on anything like tile, at least not when you’re starting out. Drilling through tile could potentially cause cracks and other malformations, which could really ruin your day. Unlike drywall, tile is a bit more difficult to fix unless you know how to do it. In fact, more often than not you’ll probably have to replace the individual tiles themselves. That’s not a whole lot of fun if you’ve ever done it. In fact, you might have to hire a professional if you end up doing that.

What would you consider a “wrong” way to clean a holder? Well, a typical way to do it wrong would be to use some sort of harsh chemical. This includes such things as bleach, ammonia, or any mixture of the two (don’t mix them!). Remember that whatever you use to clean the holder itself, there’s a possibility that a small amount of that can get on your brush if you’re not careful. Would you want to be brushing your teeth with a toothbrush with bleach on it? I’d hope not. While it’s possible to get your bathroom accessories really clean using this method, the health risks when it comes to your family’s well-being are a little too high. Bleach has its places, but it should never be used for cleaning items that can find their way into your mouth, nose, ears, or whatever. Bad stuff, that!

The same goes for ammonia and other chemical cleansers such as 409. While these work great on bathroom fixtures like sinks, they’re not so great to use on your toothbrush holders. Again, there’s a health risk there. While 409 might say that it’s non-toxic on the bottle, you still don’t want to get it in your mouth. Ammonia is the same way.

So, what can you use to really get that toothbrush holder clean? Stick to basic everyday dish soap. Dish soap is designed to be used on things that will be in contact with your food (and that naturally will find its way into your mouth!), and is safe to use on anything that you might come in contact. The chemicals aren’t harsh, and the residue from the soap is easy to remove. While you may not want to put a dirty toothbrush holder in your dishwasher, a simple sponge with a bit of soap on it will go a long way toward getting that holder clean. If you want a little bit better clean, use antibacterial dish soap.

First of all, you need to find a holder that’s not going to hold a bunch of bacteria. That means anything that’s made out of any kind of porous material is going to be right out. Naturally you’re probably not going to leave the bristles of the brush touching this surface, but of course you never know what can happen. The stuff the grows in bathrooms on the walls, floors, and fixtures can be pretty nasty. You can get all sorts of germs and mildew growing there that may cause harm to your family if you’re not watching carefully. This means that you shouldn’t get any kind of toothbrush holder that’s made out of say, rubber or wood. Both of these materials have slight pores in them and can trap and allow that bacteria to breed. You want to stick to materials like metal, stone, ceramic, etc. Things that are hard and shiny on the surface are especially good at keeping those germs away. Most of all, you want to ensure that whatever holder you get, you shouldn’t allow the toothbrush bristles to touch each other.

This may not strike people as a big deal as long as everyone’s related, but there are still germs that can be passed around from person to person. If, for example, one person in your family has the cold, that virus can be spread through two toothbrushes touching each other. Interesting, huh?
